Question Topic Connections

Hello I'm Brendan Wissinger and my capstone topic for Upward Bound Summer Program this year (2018) is Climate Change.  Climate Change is the change in the global climate toward higher temperatures because of human caused pollution of the atmosphere with greenhouse gases possibility causing effects like the loss of Coral Reefs, more heat waves, longer droughts, larger heavy downpours, more floods, stronger hurricanes, increase in winter storms, sea level rise, lower air quality, national and international security crises, more disease, more problems with allergies and asthma, etc. Personally I know I lot about Climate Change because I have been interested in it since second grade.  Last year I did my capstone on Climate Change, particularly Sea Level Rise in New York City.  This year my question is:  “What are the misconceptions vs facts about Climate Change?”  I have never formulated anything about Climate Change about misconceptions vs facts but always have wanted to.  But have had answers to the main misconceptions and generally perceived thoughts (though I have never thought of them as generally perceived thoughts.),  For example Climate Change is not happening, Climate Change is good or Climate Change is caused by the sun, or that Climate Change is caused by Nature in general, or that CO2 is not increasing or that industry is the biggest contributor to climate change, or that climate change is not currently happening, misconceptions, or the dangers of sea level rise and current paths we are on, and scientific consensus, generally perceived thoughts.  So I don't have a semi-complete list of answers to misconceptions and facts nor a semi-complete list of questions.  And those are my two main questions: A list of generally perceived thoughts about Climate Change. And are they Incorrect or Correct and why.  Also I want to find an answer to where the pause or hiatus between 1998 and 2013 had any truth to it if possible to do that part, because it is another project in itself.

  1. Brendan I love the way you are so passionate about climate change and how much you want people to be aware of it. I myself tend to worry about climate change also and I wish by your capstone I'll be more informed about what I should believe an what I should argue when it comes to climate change. I would like to suggest to maybe talk about how each country could do a little bit more to help decrease the risk of disintegrating the ozone layer. we need to take care of our earth since there are more generations to come that need to be able to breath natural and healthy air, its such an important cause and even though there is lots of people worrying about it there is not so much support for it to make it better. I trust that with your knowledge and passion everyone will get a better understanding of how climate change can get better in the long run with lots of hard work and dedication. I'm so happy to see a capstone project dedicated to something many people ignore but is as important as education and will affect the well being of others.

    2. Thank you!!! I will make sure to keep that in mind. But just to let you know Climate Change and the Ozone Layer Depletion are not the same subject though. Climate Change is caused by humans putting more greenhouse gases like CO2, Nitrous Oxide and Methane into the Atmosphere which conduct heat, raising the global temperature.

  3. Brendan climate change is obviously a very important topic to you and you explained it very well. I learned a few new things just with this introduction to your topic. It’s very unique how instead of full on information, you guys are doing it like facts and myths style. I am very excited to learn the rest. I understand this is a very important topic to everybody especially the younger generation because we will be the ones affected from it. From someone who doesn’t really know much about this topic I think adding many examples was a great idea for others with limited knowledge on the topic to have a better understanding. I have a better understanding now, but I would also like to learn if climate change is going to get dangerous for humans? If so has climate change always been dangerous? If not when did climate change start hitting dangerous levels? Maybe you can cover the topic of how scientist gather their information regarding climate change? Also, for your presentation you might want to cover the nature aspect, whether it be facts of what actually happens, for example plants dying, or what people get confused on regarding climate change.

    1. Thank you. Yes, it'll get dangerous, from the impacts I mentioned above and others. It depends what you mean by dangerous. 400 parts per million of CO2 I would call semi-dangerous, meaning it causes environmental refugee problems (Bangladesh) , hurricane problems (Katrina, Sandy, Irma, Maria), (Inter)National Security Issues (Syrian Civil War), fish die offs and coral bleaching (Great Barrier Reef), and melting of Glaciers (Kimijanero), Droughts (Cape Town South Africa and California and Australia), Sea Level Rise (Bangaladesh), Flooding (India), heat waves (Pakistan (A city in Pakistan got to 120 degrees Fahrenheit during April)). But all of this is speculation, because it is hard to pinpoint what storm is caused by Climate Change, or how much of it is Climate Change (though we do know how much more flooding Sandy caused because of Climate Change), we just know larger storms are going to get stronger and more frequent because of it. (Katrina might be before the the 400 ppm.). I'll look into it more.

  4. Hello Brendan Wissinger, I'm very impressed with how you've been into Climate Change since the 2nd grade and you are also doing a capstone about it, that's cool. Something I feel like you should throw in your project is Global Warming. Some questions you should think about is what is Global Warming and how does it affect the world?

    1. Climate Change is another phrase for Global Warming as is Global Change or Climate Crisis.
